The short answer

Each standard heras panel is 3.5 metres long. So:

Number of panels = Perimeter length (in metres) ÷ 3.5, rounded up

Then add 1-2 extra panels per gate (gate panels are usually slightly shorter or fit alongside standard panels), and allow a small margin (10%) for corners, overlaps, and unexpected obstructions.

Quick reference table

Site perimeter Standard panels needed (no gates) Add for 1 pedestrian gate
10m 3 panels + 1 gate panel
20m 6 panels + 1 gate panel
30m 9 panels + 1 gate panel
40m 12 panels + 1 gate panel
50m 15 panels + 1 gate panel
75m 22 panels + 1 gate panel
100m 29 panels + 1 gate panel
150m 43 panels + 1 gate panel
200m 58 panels + 1 gate panel
300m 86 panels + 1 gate panel
500m 143 panels + 2 gate panels

Round figures — we’ll fine-tune on the call.

How to measure your perimeter

Square or rectangular site

Add up the four sides. e.g. a 30m × 20m plot = 30+20+30+20 = 100m perimeter.

Irregular site

Walk the perimeter with a measuring wheel or count strides (an adult stride is roughly 0.75m). Or pace it on a satellite map (Google Maps right-click → “Measure distance”).

Bounded by existing wall/fence on one side?

Subtract the length you don’t need fencing for. e.g. 100m perimeter but a 30m boundary wall already there = only 70m of new fencing required.

Send us the corner coordinates and we’ll work it out for you.

What about gates?

If you need a pedestrian access point through the perimeter, we supply a hinged gate panel (~2m wide). Add 1 gate panel to your count. For vehicles, panels are simply separated and re-clamped when needed — no special gate hardware required.

Tell us when you book and we’ll bring gates on the same delivery if needed.

What about corners?

Standard panels turn corners fine. The clamps allow 90-degree (and sometimes acute / obtuse) angles. You don’t need special corner panels — but at very tight corners you may lose a few cm of effective coverage. Add 10% to your panel count if your site has lots of turns or an irregular shape.

What about gradients / sloped sites?

Heras panels work on gentle slopes. For steeper gradients (more than ~10°), panels may sit at an angle and lose some effective height. Tell us if your site is sloped and we’ll talk through whether you need: – Additional bracing struts (recommended) – More panels (to overlap for compensation) – A site visit before quoting (for very steep or terraced sites)

What about wind / exposure?

In exposed locations (clifftop, beachfront, hilltop sites), heras panels can act like sails. For windy sites we recommend: – Bracing struts (£1/panel/week extra) — cross-bracing to triangulate panels – Additional concrete feet on alternate panels for extra ballast

Tell us about exposure when you book and we’ll spec it appropriately.

Common worked examples

A 4-bedroom new-build plot (residential development)

Typical 25m × 18m plot, full perimeter = 86m. Round up to 25 panels + small margin = ~28 panels total.

A standard commercial building site (mid-size)

75m × 40m site, perimeter = 230m. 65 panels + 1 pedestrian gate + margin = ~68 panels.

A demolition exclusion zone around a small house

House is 12m × 10m, exclusion zone needs to extend ~3m beyond walls. Zone perimeter = ~18m × 16m × 2 = 68m. 20 panels + 1 small access point = ~22 panels.

A weekend festival’s main arena perimeter

Roughly oval, ~80m long × 60m wide = perimeter ~225m. 65 panels + 2 entry gates (4 panels) + back-of-stage exclusion (15 panels) = ~85 panels.

A driveway closure for a residential extension

~6m wide driveway, panels along one side = 6m. 2 panels minimum (with concrete feet they need to overlap a touch for stability). Most domestic jobs come in at 4-8 panels.

A car park temporarily closed for resurfacing

50m × 30m car park, perimeter = 160m. 46 panels + 1 pedestrian gate + margin = ~50 panels.

Still not sure?

That’s fine. Honestly, most people get this slightly wrong first time — usually over-spec by 20-30%. Just call us with your site dimensions and we’ll work out the actual panel count in 2 minutes. We’d rather get it right on the call than show up with the wrong amount.

What you actually need to tell us when you call

  1. Site postcode — for the delivery quote
  2. Site shape and dimensions — “roughly 25m × 18m” is fine; you don’t need a survey
  3. Gates needed — pedestrian gate yes/no
  4. Hire period — best estimate; we can extend if needed
  5. Site conditions — is it sloped? Exposed? Hard standing or soft ground?
  6. Special requirements — bracing struts, signage, etc.

We’ll quote you a flat rate, all-in, in about 5 minutes.
